Dimensions unveils new book

16 March 2010

Dimensions, a leading specialist not-for-profit provider of support for people with learning disabilities and autism, has revealed today how it is meeting the challenges of personalisation in a groundbreaking new book.

'Making It Personal', a frank account of the organisation's journey to transform its services, sets out to share best practice with others working across the health and social care sector. Written by Dimensions' Executive Director Steve Scown, in partnership with Helen Sanderson Associates, Making it Personal was launched at In Control's The Big International Event at Liverpool's Convention Centre today.

Over the past 18 months Dimensions has worked with Helen Sanderson Associates to ensure the services it provides meet the needs of the people it supports. The book provides an insight into how Dimensions has achieved a shift to provide personalised services.

Steve Scown, Executive Director at Dimensions, says: "We realised some time ago that the future of care was going to be very, very different and we would need to alter our approach. The whole focus has shifted from organisations to individuals and their families.

"The book is about our journey, what we learned along the way, what we did right, what we did wrong and how we plan to take things forward. It's not because we think we have all the answers – we don't. We are sharing an honest account of our journey in the hope that it will help other service providers to venture more confidently on their own journeys of change."

Helen Sanderson not only has vast experience in the sector but is also a member of a support circle for a person with learning disabilities and is able to draw on that experience. She says:

"Transformation requires nothing short of root and branch changes to policy, practices and culture and Dimensions has embraced this challenge head on. It's great to be able to share our journey with other organisations and the sector more widely."
