This week Arnold*, a gentleman we support, spoke to the Independent about why the Mental Health Bill is crucial for improving the lives of autistic people and people with learning disabilities.
In the article Arnold shares his personal journey from living in a hospital for over a decade to achieving independent living with support from his local council and Dimensions. This transition has significantly enhanced Arnold’s well-being, alleviating his anxiety and improving his health. He shared how he now feels safe and proud of his home, has reconnected with his mother after six years, and is building confidence in his community.
Despite Arnold’s positive transformation, he highlights that over 2,000 autistic people and those with learning disabilities remain institutionalised, often receiving inadequate care. Arnold stresses the need for change, emphasising that the new Mental Health Bill could be a vital step towards better treatment. Arnold is urging for action to ensure that more people can access meaningful support and live fulfilling lives outside of hospital settings.
