Richard Campbell – keeping busy at work and within his community
Being an outgoing gentleman, Richard Campbell likes to keep himself busy and to help others around him.
Where better for Richard, 68, to be active and helpful than at his two charity shop volunteer jobs in Telford, Shropshire.
He’s worked with the Severn Hospice for several years, and at Bernardo’s for two.
At both he’s had many highlights, as Enid Ghampson, the Deputy Service Manager in the residential home where Richard lives, describes:
“Richard, in his time volunteering, has mentioned a few people he’s had the opportunity to work with over the last few years. He fondly remembers some colleagues who have gone into retirement, and the friendships he made with them.”
“He was particularly pleased at being given a certificate for long service, after working with Severn Hospice for five years. He said it was a very proud moment.
“Richard usually helps to sort out items donated to the shops. When they have sorted out the items, Richard helps to put price labels on the items, ready to be displayed in the shops.
“He also sometimes helps customers to find what they’re looking for when they struggle.
“But overall, Richard says that the highlight of his jobs is the opportunity to meet new people.”
To him, it’s his way of helping the community around him, and he displays this by working in the charity shops, which in turn helps give money to people who need it.
Described as a ‘delightful gentleman’, Richard takes an interest in everyone he meets.
As Enid adds, “Richard carries himself with a lot of respect and seeks to live as independently as possible. He welcomes any challenge which will help him grow and develop as an individual. He has a great sense of humour and often likes to have banter with his housemates and support staff.”
That development in himself led to him completing a Learn Telford computer competency course recently. He did it so he could “further promote his independence by learning the basics of using a computer so that he can type and save information when he needs it”. Richard aims at creating an email address to allow him receive and send emails in the near future.
Richard takes immense pride in being able to perform independent tasks such as cleaning, preparing simple meals and, of course, engaging in the community around him by himself. He likes that he gets to make decisions about his day to day activities without support.
Along with work, learning and being independent as much as he can, Richard keeps himself busy by going on long walks, watching football (he’s a huge Liverpool FC supporter), and swimming.
Richard is always up for any challenge thrown his way, making him a remarkable individual, so naturally he is excited about being nominated for a Leaders List Award.
“I’ve never been chosen for an award or received one in my life, so this would be the first. I feel very happy.”
