Adapting to communication needs
Supporting communication is one of the most important ways of making sure people get the most out of health appointments and that their health needs have been fully understood.
In this video, Jordan, Mark, Annie and Dave talk about communication and making the right adjustments to people’s care.
Quick tips:
- Use Easy Read: Easy Read is a way of writing clear, concise information with pictures to support the text. Click the link at the top of this page to see this webpage in easy read.
- Don’t use jargon or medical terms; try to speak in a way your patient will understand.
- Support use of communication aids; not everybody will use spoken words to communicate so be open to different types of communication aids.
- Work with support workers; support workers and carers know your patient best and will be able to help you understand what they’re communicating and what has been happening to their health and wellbeing.
- Be patient and flexible; be open to new ways of working, as long as it works it is worth the extra effort and an open mind.
