Research shows that people with learning disabilities are more likely to die from health issues that could have been treated sooner.
Research shows that people with learning disabilities are more likely to end up in hospital for something that their doctor could have treated.
The Dimensions My GP and Me campaign is working to stop that.
We have found that some people cannot get healthcare at the right time or quickly enough.
Some health issues affect people with a learning disability or autism more.
One health issue is constipation.
Constipation is when you cannot go for a poo.
Constipation is caused by lots of things. It can be caused by not eating enough healthy foods or drinking enough water.
Constipation can be caused by over medication.
Over medication is when people are given medication for problems that could be fixed in better ways.
Over medication is also a health issue for people with a learning disability or autism. We want the people we support to not take as much medicine.
Another health issue is people are not having tests to see if they have cancer.
People might not be having tests for cancer as they are worried about them.
By not having these tests it means that cancer is not found as early as it could be.
This can make it more dangerous and harder to treat.
